Chief Joseph Orono

Are you aware of Chief Joseph Orono? It will interest your students that Penobscot Tribal Nation Chief Kirk Francis says in an interview (see previous post) that Chief Orono could easily be on Mt. Rushmore as one of the Founding Fathers. Why?

  • Our white brothers (the Americans) tell us that they come to our land to enjoy liberty and life. But their king (of England) is coming to bind them in chains and kill them. We must fight him. We will stand on the same ground with our brothers (the Americans). Chief Joseph Orono 1755
  • Orono is an interesting figure historically. The online information is somewhat contradictory, making him a good subject for student researchers. Wikipedia has an article, and you might look at this piece from Genforum.
  • And it is probably surprising news to your students that a town is named after this Penobscot Chief – was  named after him at its founding by white settlers.
