I am an [grade, e.g. 6th] grade student in [teacher]’s class. In Social Studies, we study the culture, history, economics and worldview of Maine’s Native nations, the [list them - you pick the order].
An important part of our study is stereotypes. We learn what stereotypes are, why they exist, and why we need to be aware of their negative effects on children and adults in Maine.
Perhaps you are not aware of the negative impact of the [specific item being discussed - e.g. roadside sign in front of your store or Little Indian stickers sold in your store]. I can find the following stereotypes of the Native American in your product:
- [in this space, you should list specifics]
- [more - be specific and list exactly what you see]
As you can see, a single item can send a powerful message. Imagine how great this message is when combined with hundreds of similar items seen over a lifetime. Imagine how powerful it must be to see this [item] in your house every day; you would begin to believe that the stereotypes were reality. Stereotypes are perpetuated by products like [name the item].
Maine’s Native nations should be represented with their own artwork and products, not with stereotypes. Their contributions and achievements are studied because they are significant in our history. Products [or objects] like this belittle and mock that contribution.
As a student and citizen of Maine, I request that you demonstrate your respect for the Wabanakis by removing this product, and similar items, from your shelves. In doing so, you will contribute to a positive change in Maine’s attitude toward the Wabanakis.
I have included a stamped, self-addressed envelop so that you can respond to my request.
Thank you for your consideration,
